SP code stands for "Super Performance" which means that this lens design for professional use. In some photography magazine that I ever read, reported that Tamron AF 90mm f/2.8 SP Di Macro even better than Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM L IS or Nikkor AF-S 105 mm f/2.8G IF ED VR Micro. For the Nikon mounting, Tamron AF 90mm f/2.8 SP Di Macro already equipped with AF motor so the AF system will still work in the Nikon entry level DSLR just like Nikon D40X, D60, D3100, D5100, etc. The Autofocus Manual focus switch also little bit different with the other lens, Tamron AF 90mm f/2.8 SP Di Macro use a focus clutch mechanism by moving the focus ring backward and forward. Overall, Tamron AF 90mm f/2.8 SP Di Macro can be regarded as best for value lens in macro category.
